Not All SD-WAN Vendors are Created Equal

Introduction

SD-WAN is changing how corporate networks connect to branches as well as the internet. There are several benefits to implementing an SD-WAN for your business including cost savings, network security, resiliency, cloud management & visibility, application routing and overall increase in Quality of Experience (QoE).

“By 2023, to deliver flexible, cost-effective scalable bandwidth, 30% of Enterprise locations will have only internet WAN connectivity, compared with approximately 15% in 2020.”

Which Vendor Should You Select?

Each SD-WAN vendor has their own strengths and capabilities. Knowing which vendor is suitable for your environment can be complex and time consuming and requires an in-depth knowledge of each vendor’s product-set.

Some of the vendors approach SD-WAN from low cost edge management, others from the network security point of view, others focus on the ease of integrating wireless networks like 4G and 5G technologies. In short, not all SD-WAN vendors are created equal.

The migration to SD-WAN by an organisation begins with business requirement gathering, engaging multiple vendors, countless presentations, proposals, followed by proof of concept and technology trials. This process can be lengthy and ultimately means that reaping the benefits provided by SD-WAN for your organisation are delayed.

Gartner Magic Quadrant

One way to get a holistic view of the SD-WAN market is to use industry reports and reviews.

Gartner, the leading research and advisory firm, assesses most vendors in the space yearly against standardised criteria. Gartner’s holistic assessment looks at the vendor’s vision as well as their ability to execute within the competitive landscape. Gartner also considers the vendor’s core functionality and the optional features they provide.

Based on this assessment Gartner produce a Magic Quadrant ranking vendors in four quadrants – Niche Players, Challengers, Visionaries and Leaders.
